At Le Pine Funerals we help bring your family together to arrange a funeral service that truly celebrates and honours the life and values of your loved one.
Le Pine Celebrates 130 Years
Le Pine Funerals has retained its family values growing from a small family business to a large network of funeral homes. The Le Pine name will always stand for devoted and personalised service to the Victorian community.
At the heart of Le Pine Funerals is a family of people who care deeply about supporting bereaved families and their community when they need it most. The modern Le Pine operation also specialises in supporting families beyond the funeral including reflective memorial services and community education sessions.
Over the last 130 years, Le Pine Funerals has become highly regarded in Australia. Since 1891, Le Pine Funerals has tailored funeral services to the needs and values of families in Victoria.
Born in London, our founder Joseph Le Pine worked as a carpenter in the Australian colonies. In 1891, Joseph established J. R. Le Pine and Sons in Richmond. In the early days, it was common for coffins to be made by carpenters, cabinet makers or similar artisans. Joseph used his carpenter skills to make coffins and would assist the family in making funeral arrangements, which was also common for manufacturers to do at that time.
Joseph & Harriet Le Pine
The success of J. R. Le Pine and Sons was undoubtedly due to the skills contributed by each member of the close-knit Le Pine Family. Joseph’s wife Harriett and daughter Jessie were skilled in the needlework required for lining and decorating coffins. Joseph’s son Stephen was a young entrepreneur and played an active role in extending the reach of the business throughout Melbourne. Joseph was a skilled cabinet maker and crafted superior coffins.

Our services
Le Pine Funerals is devoted to creating personalised services to the Victorian community and each funeral service can be unique as the person it is for. Our dedicated funeral directors can walk you through arranging a traditional funeral or a service that is completely custom-designed and tailored to your wishes. We are privileged to care for Victorian families, whether we’re organising an intimate farewell or state funeral, we apply the same level of care and attention to the funeral arrangements.
Melbourne is one of the world’s most harmonious and culturally diverse communities. There are around 140 different cultures represented in the city’s population. Our multilingual team can communicate and provide support to families for all types of funerals. Located in our funeral home in Glen Waverley, our dedicated Asian hall caters for all Buddhist and Taoist funeral services. We cater to the wishes of all cultures and religions.
In 2005, Le Pine Funerals conducted the state service for WW1 veteran Lieutenant William Evan Crawford Allan. Lieutenant Allan was Australia’s last living veteran of WW1 and was honoured at HMAS Cerberus on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. More than 1,000 naval personals accompanied the gun carriage supporting his flag-draped coffin in a solemn one-kilometre. For a man who held such a unique position in history, we were privileged to be able to coordinate a service that displayed the enormous gratitude felt by a nation.
Most recently, the Le Pine team was entrusted to organise a farewell for one of Australia's best-loved entertainers, Mr Bert Newton AM MBE. Tributes were made by Premier Dan Andrews and Eddie McGuire before a full Requiem Mass was held at St Patrick's Cathedral. His wife, Patti, released doves with her family as the hearse left the Cathedral. While COVID-19 restrictions meant only 500 mourners could attend in person, the service was live-streamed across the world and broadcast live on Channels 7, 9 and 10.
Our community
Over the years, Le Pine Funerals has partnered with many local community groups and our funeral directors have well-established connections in the local communities they serve.
Pat Cronin Foundation
Le Pine Funerals has recently partnered with the Pat Cronin Foundation. The foundation was established in memory of Pat Cronin who, in 2016 at 19 years old, lost his life after he was punched in the head from behind in a ‘coward punch’ incident. The Le Pine Funerals team at Eltham arranged Pat’s funeral and cared for Pat Cronin’s family. This foundation holds great significance to the team, who are now involved in many activities run by the Pat Cronin Foundation including the annual Be Wise Walk. This activity encourages participants to choose a day (or days) to walk in their neighbourhood or hit the local trail to help raise funds to educate young Australians to stop senseless violence.
Percheron Horse Program
For many years, Le Pine has run a unique outreach horse program. This involves taking Percheron horses to visit residents of nursing homes across Melbourne to help enhance the lives of people in our community who live in residential aged care.
Le Pine has a 20-year relationship with Anglicare and proudly continues to be a major partner of Anglicare’s Winter Warmers, a yearly drive to gather warm clothing and blankets for people in need.
Le Pine Funerals is a proud sponsor of the Mazenod Football Club which has over 200 players participating in football games each year.
Le Pine has had a long association with Rotary with many of our location managers being committed and active members.
