The Le Pine Funerals business was started by one man, Joseph Le Pine, whose family fled their homeland of France in the 1870's to escape persecution.
Jospeh worked as a cabinet maker and, in the early days of funeral services, it was common for coffins to be made by a carpenter, a cabinet maker or similar artisan. It was also common for the manufacturer of coffins to assist families to make funeral arrangements. By 1891 Joseph was established as an undertaker in the growing colonial city of Melbourne.
